”We have the nicest people in Finland”

PETTERI KIURU
On forest excursions and pancake brunches between the lakes
April 29, 2022

Kiuru is the co-founder and CEO of new outdoor clothing brand Wølmark Finland, aiming to make the best clothing for hikers from alpaca wool. Keeping it local, the company is not only based but also designs and manufactures the garments in Tampere.

— We are specialized in making products out of alpaca wool because of its quality features which come to full value in hiking. We are on a mission to reduce fast use of clothing and harmful materials — and stating that merino wool is for sheep! he says.

For someone who hasn’t been to Tampere, how’d you describe it?

— It’s a lovely city located between two big lakes. It has this really cool old red brick vibe and is growing to be the best place to visit in Finland. At least in my opinion. Tampere has a lot to offer — from beautiful landscapes to cool restaurants and bars. Also, we have a brand new tram and a new arena (constructed for the World Championship in ice hockey, kicking off in Tampere and Helsinki two weeks from now, Ed’s note).

My favourite thing that makes me proud of Tampere:

— Two things. First, the people in Tampere. We have the nicest people in Finland. I’m sure that in other small towns there are too, but a lot of people out of Tampere have told the same and I have lived in other cities in Finland as well and have to say: Tampere has the nicest people. Also, I’m a Manchester United fan — and we are a twin city to Manchester.

My favourite cultural spot:

— There are a lot of great museums in Tampere worth checking out. But, I am a movie guy so cinema is the place for me — it’s always an experience to check out a movie on the big screen.

My favourite place for a creative or business meeting:

— There are two great places. One is my former school called Proakatemia. It is an entrepreneurial school full of passionate students. The second one is a startup house called Platform6 full of startups from Tampere, where we also have our office. Upstairs of Platform6 is a startup community place called Tribe Tampere.

My favourite place for dining out:

— I’m a pizza guy so I will say Napoli pizzeria. It has been awarded the best pizza place in Tampere a bunch of times. If you want more traditional Finnish food and beer, Plevna is the place to be.

My favourite weekend routine:

— Visiting nearby natural parks. One is a really beautiful place called Kintulammi. I have been there a lot of times and it never gets boring.

My favourite breakfast place:

— Hands down Cafe Pispala. They have a ’mean’ pancake brunch and to wash it down you need to order their own ice tea.

My favourite excursion or city escape:

— I’m more of a forest person. So, in Hervanta there is Hervanta lake and Suolijärvi park. Very close to the city, you can get there by tram and have a campfire to grill some sausages and enjoy nature.

My favourite local entrepreneur or creative we want to promote:

Herkkä Snacks. They make these lentil snacks which are incredible, especially the Transylvania flavour with chili and garlic.

My favourite hotel for a staycation:

— I have visited the Torni hotel a lot of times. It has an amazing penthouse lounge where you can see the whole city landscape.

Torni Hotel.

My favourite route for a run or walk:

— New lake scenery Tahmelan ranta. It is a fantastic place to walk or run in the city. During the summer, South Park is the place to be.

My favourite place for fashion:

Miela Designroom, in the heart of Tampere, located on the main street Hämeenkatu — a store with a changing collection of Finnish design brands from clothes to wearables.

My favourite space for great design:

— I want to name the whole city of Tampere as a great design. There are a lot of statues and paintings on buildings around the city and in the centre, there is Koskipuisto which has beautiful lights on buildings in the dark.

My favourite local media:

— A newspaper called Moro — everyday news from Tampere with a nice spirit. No wars or other horrible news.

My favourite thing at home:

— As I said, I love to watch movies, so that is what I do at home, but my favourite thing is my Playstation.
