Stefan Mahlberg has worked with carpentry and product development, with designers and brands such as Artek, Tom Dixon, Eero Aarnio, and Hem, and is now the co-founder of newly launched Finnish design brand Basta.

— We combine world-class design talent with unprecedented innovations to create the most convenient user experience without losing sight of aesthetics, style, and comfort, he tells. Our innovative development team in Finland works together with international design talents to bring solutions that not only have a beautiful form, catching the eye of a design enthusiast, but also, are engineered to function in a smart and sustainable way. Hence, in the heart of the brand is the interplay between engineering and design, combining international design flavours with our in-house development talent. Our thinking is built into the design of our products to enable assembling, reassembling, and maintenance to offer solutions that can make a longer life cycle possible for design furniture. Since launching, we’ve seen a lot of traction for our key pieces in the collection, especially Cubi by Marcel Wanders and Disco table by Antrei Hartikainen have been getting a super positive response from the market.

Renowned designer Marcel Wanders is not only designing for the company but is also one of its investors and Stefan Mahlberg also states the importance of taking a product’s entire lifespan into consideration.

— We strive to be a company that has an innovative mentality when it comes to sustainability in furniture, from materials to assembly, reassembly, and maintenance. As such, it’s important for us to also think about how the parts can be discarded at the end of the product’s lifespan. Sustainability for us does not stop there either — it is built into our logic to develop more environmentally sustainable transportation, logistics, and packaging. Our efforts for sustainability are emphasised on all levels in order to be a company that genuinely points into the direction of more responsible furniture production. Our aim is to shift consumers’ mindsets from buying disposable furniture — which might be convenient but eventually turns into a very expensive habit — to being able to take their design furniture with them wherever their life may take them. Due to the innovativeness of our designs and the possibilities of assembly and reassembly, we can also impact by removing excess packaging and bulky shipping by designing furniture that can be broken down into smart, travel-optimised pieces, Mahlberg concludes.
